Hydraulic release bearing is an important part of the clutch system. It gives the driver more comfort in operation of the clutch, especially during gear change.
It’s an important part of the clutch system. It gives the driver more comfort in operation of the clutch, especially during gear change.
Hydraulic release bearing is used in all manual transmissions and motorbike transmissions with wet clutches. The idea behind it is similar to that of brake servo control.
Hydraulic release bearing is a flexible bearing without spring action. It is driven by the hydraulic pressure generated from the clutch master cylinder. A reservoir can be added to prevent air bubbles from entering the system.
The release bearing contains a bearing body and a bearing sleeve. The bearing sleeve is pressed over the bearing body and held in place by a circlip. The bearing body is pressed into a thrust bearing housing, and clamped to it by means of an adjusting bolt which has a locknut fitted. A dust cover is fitted to the end of the bearing body, which projects from the clutch housing, and , in addition, an oil seal or O-ring may be used between this cover and the clutch housing.
When you press and hold the clutch pedal with your foot, it will push against the master cylinder piston. By pushing the piston, it generates hydraulic pressure in fluid inside. The fluid then pushes on a piston in the release mechanism, causing it to force a fork that moves along a shaft on which the throw-out bearing pivots or slides. When this happens, it disengages two plates of friction material that are normally pressed together by means of pressure plate springs so they can move apart, disengaging them from contact with each other and thus disengaging power transmission between engine and gearbox. This in turn allows you to shift gears while engine speed remains constant.
The release bearing supports the driver at high speeds or during longer gear changes and guarantees smooth engagement of the clutch and optimized shift comfort. Therefore hydraulic release bearing is used in all manual transmissions and motorbike transmissions with wet clutches. The idea behind is similar to that of brake servo control – transmission of driver power from pedal to master cylinder by means of hydraulic medium (clutch fluid).
Hydraulic throwout bearing is in charge of clutch functioning and smooth shifting.
Hydraulic throwout bearing is in charge of clutch functioning and smooth shifting.
A throwout bearing, also called a “clutch release bearing,” is the last link in the chain that releases the clutch when you push on the pedal. The pressure from your foot pushes on a small plunger inside the master cylinder, which forces fluid to travel down to the slave cylinder mounted by your transmission. When this happens, a piston pops out of the slave cylinder and presses against your throwout bearing. This pushes on a fork that pulls back on an arm attached to your clutch pressure plate and disengages it from the flywheel, allowing you to shift gears without grinding everything to a halt or shattering something underneath your car!
Hydraulic throwout bearings are also called hydraulic slave cylinders.
While the terms hydraulic throwout bearing and hydraulic slave cylinder are often used interchangeably, there is a slight distinction between the two. A hydraulic throwout bearing is a dumbed-down version of a hydraulic slave cylinder: it lacks any sort of self-adjustment or clutch release assistance. It essentially fits in the same place as an original equipment mechanical setup would.
Hydraulic throwout bearings are also called hydraulic slave cylinders. *
A hydraulic slave cylinder, on the other hand, can be adjusted to take up slack in the system and self-adjusts as needed while you’re driving. This type of device will also assist with clutch release and make your life much easier if you have to replace your clutch disc or pressure plate while still using your stock flywheel.
You need a good hydraulic throwout bearing to enjoy driving your car with a manual transmission.
A hydraulic throwout bearing is an important part of the auto’s transmission system. It allows the car to shift smoothly and operate the clutch in a way that reduces wear.
It is also known as a “hydraulic slave cylinder.”

A hydraulic throwout bearing is an important part of the auto’s transmission system. It enables smooth shifting and clutch operation. No one enjoys a rough shift or a clutch that sticks because of a faulty throwout bearing. Drivers need a good throwout bearing to enjoy driving their car with a manual transmission.
What is a Throwout Bearing in Hydraulics?
In manual transmissions and clutch systems, throwout bearings are used.
A throwout bearing is a mechanical device that rotates and connects two additional moving parts. These two additional moving components are typically a shaft and a fork, and the throwout bearing’s function is to transmit power between these two components.
Typically, a throwout bearing is found in manual transmissions and clutch assemblies.
A manual automobile transmission requires the driver to shift gears manually by operating the clutch and shift lever/stick with their hands and feet, respectively.
The transmission’s primary function is to allow your engine to run at various speeds while providing smooth acceleration by connecting it to the vehicle’s wheels via various gearsets. Without it, your car would be immobile!
A modern manual transmission is comprised of numerous components, one of which is referred to as the throwout bearing.
In general, clutches are used when “two rotating shafts must be locked or unlocked from one another” .
Because no shaft can spin independently of another, clutches are required to disengage one shaft and allow it to accelerate or decelerate without causing damage on either end! For instance…
What Is the Function of Hydraulic Throwout Bearings?
To comprehend how a hydraulic throwout bearing works, it’s necessary to have a firm grasp on how clutches work in general.
A clutch is a device that utilizes friction to engage and disengage power transmission between two rotating shafts.
With manual transmissions, the clutch pedal activates the pressure plate by pressing it into the flywheel’s center, causing friction between them and transferring power from one rotating shaft to another.
When you depress the clutch pedal, the hydraulic throwout bearing assists in this process by releasing the pressure plate.
To accomplish this, your throwout bearing must be free to move along its long axis, as it operates via a lever that pushes it against your clutch to disengage it.
Throwout bearings are typically constructed of plastic or metal and are also referred to as release bearings due to their use in manual transmissions and clutch systems.
Why is a hydraulic throwout bearing superior to a mechanical throwout bearing?
Adjustment of hydraulic throwout bearings is not required. Each time you depress the clutch pedal, the transmission and clutch disc are completely disengaged.
A hydraulic throwout bearing has a lower chance of sticking than a cable.
When using a cable, it can become clogged over time, resulting in difficulty disengaging the clutch plate from the flywheel.
Due to the self-adjusting nature of hydraulic throwout bearings, they are less likely to fail or break down over time.
It contains no moving parts that will wear out or require maintenance.
It’s quieter because there is no back and forth chattering of a cable on its housing when the clutch pedal is released.
This is especially important if you’re street driving, as this would be inconvenient for any passengers in your vehicle, as well as for any passing pedestrians.
How to Replace a Hydraulic Throwout Bearing and Adjust It?
The steps below will walk you through replacing a hydraulic throwout bearing.
Connect the hydraulic line to the valve.
This is accomplished by loosening the clamp that secures it to the metal tubing and unscrewing it from the transmission’s ball fitting.
Remove the release fork carefully, being careful not to damage any other components or to get grease on your clothing or nearby surfaces.
Remove the old throwout bearing; this step requires the use of a screwdriver or socket wrench (depending on what your particular clutch system requires).
Replace the throwout bearing and secure it with a screw or nut (if necessary).
Install the release fork and check that all tabs are properly aligned to avoid them becoming bent during use.
Reattach this part using bolts and nuts if necessary, then set aside until all other tasks are completed before reconnecting any other items that were disconnected previously, such as cables, wires, hoses, etcetera etcetera…
What is the proper way to install a hydraulic throwout bearing?
On the transmission, install the hydraulic slave cylinder.
Install the clutch release bearing in the bellhousing on the shaft.
Align the clutch pressure plate’s dowel pins with the flywheel’s. All bolts should be torqued to 18 foot-pounds in the following order:
top right, middle right, bottom right, top left, and so on.
Align the dowel pin of the new clutch disc with the flywheel’s dowel pin. Reduce it to 18 foot-pounds torque and then remove it.
Grease both sides of each friction disc surface liberally, reinstall them, and torque them to 18 foot-pounds.
This is primarily to lubricate these surfaces, as they will not come into contact with gear oil until you break in your new clutch kit and convert it from dry friction discs to wet discs with lubricant for cooler operation.
Expose any non-greased surfaces by rotating one disc upwards and then downwards until both sides are coated with grease;
repeat this procedure a couple of times more to ensure both sides are adequately coated with grease;
then inspect everything thoroughly before wiping away any excess grease with rags or other suitable materials that can withstand high temperatures without causing damage or catching fire.
Before reinstalling anything else, ensure that all components are torqued properly.
For manual transmission and clutch systems, the throwout bearing is critical. Replacement can be accomplished by those who are proficient with tools.
We recognize that the name is not entirely self-explanatory.
“Throw” is a technical term that refers to the act of releasing or disengaging.
In manual transmission vehicles, the throwout bearing assists the driver in properly engaging and disengaging the clutch.
It is a type of bearing that transfers mechanical pressure between two points using pressurized fluid.
Also known as hydraulic slave cylinders or push-type slave cylinders, hydraulic throwout bearings are a type of hydraulic slave cylinder.
They are found in manual transmissions on automobiles as well as in heavy equipment and machinery such as backhoes, tractors, and excavators;
anything equipped with a hydraulic clutch system will have a hydraulic throwout bearing.
As the name implies, it applies force via pressurized fluid (hydraulic fluid) rather than through direct contact between metal parts (dry bearings).
This means that the device contains no moving parts other than oil; it operates by transferring pressure from one side to the other via oil.
By pressing on one end of the cylinder, you apply pressure to the oil inside, which activates an external piston arm connected to the clutch fork lever and pushing against the clutch disk at the other end of the arm.
When you depress your clutch pedal, you’re applying pressure to two different pistons: the master cylinder (located beneath your brake pedal), which acts on the brake fluid in the brake lines leading to your brakes, and a rod connected to your slave cylinder.
which forces hydraulic fluid into a line leading to your throwout bearing/slave cylinder/hydraulic clutch assembly, which is mounted next to—or sometimes even integrated into—your tr. flywheel
